On a recent work trip to Miami I finally took advantage of proximity and a free afternoon to visit Villa Vizcaya. Although the interiors are epic, they don’t let you take any photos indoors, so all my shots are of the spectacular gardens surrounding the mansion. It all brought to mind Hearst Castle – though on a much smaller scale.
The gallery shots below show some highlights: a stone “ship” in the harbor, Venetian poles, a marble-floored gazebo, a topiary maze, sculptures, fountains, wonderful wrought ironwork, greenery, etc.
Here are a couple of close-ups I found especially interesting. The ceiling in the outdoor gallery. Grandiose…and decaying. (Open in a separate window to enjoy the details.)
And this stone lizard-like creature, complete with a live lizard hanging out on its tail.
