Visible Storage

When I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier this summer, I came across a part of the museum I’d never seen before in the American Wing – “Visible Storage”. This is such a good idea, and I wish they had it for other areas of the museum (or at the Louvre – how amazing would that be?!)

Basically it allows the museum to display parts of the collection they don’t have room to showcase in the galleries, since their holdings are so vast.  This room puts like objects together in rows and rows of cases, even if they are from different periods and movements, which is interesting.

Busts

Paintings

Frames

Mirrors

Grandfather clocks

Glassware

Silver

Fireplace hardware/irons

And they have a fantastic online system where you can look up the location and details about any one particular object. You can navigate from the map level to a section to a grouping of items to just one item.
