Life Underground

When I was in NY last month, my aunt and I came across some quirky little bronze sculptures in a subway station in Chelsea.  We saw the first one on the street guarding the elevator.

Then saw another inside the station.

Once we realized they were systematically sprinkled around, I wandered all over trying to locate as many as I could find. Below is my own little gallery of the ones I found, though you can see some clearer shots of the collection here on the artist’s website.

Delightful to find a touch of whimsy in some subway art, especially after the first major collection we came across at the Chambers/World Trade Center stop was some creepy mosaic eyes (part of a larger work called “Oculus“).
